Could your child be eligible for Free School Meals?
In these difficult financial times, we want to make sure you are getting all the help that you are due.
A lot of people do not claim Free School Meals even though they are entitled. You do not need to worry about other children knowing your child gets Free School Meals. Only the school and catering staff will know.
You could save £550 a year for each child and your children could benefit from a good hot meal at lunchtime. The school will benefit too – they will get the Pupil Premium of £1480 a year from the government for each child on Free School Meals.
Reception, year 1 and year 2 – Universal free school meals
The government’s school food plan provides funding for government-funded primary schools in England to offer a free lunch to every child in their reception classes, year 1 and year 2.
Reception and above
Even if your child is eligible for Universal free school meals (as above), you may also be eligible for free school meals, if you receive any of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on: paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit: if you apply on or after 1 April 2018, your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)
- If your circumstances change and your earnings go above £7,400 net per annum (£616.67 per month), your child will no longer be eligible for free school meals. You will need to apply for them again if your income goes down.
To apply, go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals and complete the form.
